Marlins sign Johnson to four-year deal

The Florida Marlins have signed starting pitcher Josh Johnson to a four-year contract worth $39 million.

The deal comes just days after the Marlins made it known that they wanted to increase their payroll this season.

It’s one of the biggest contracts the Marlins have given out in franchise history. The deal for Hanley Ramirez is the only bigger deal handed out by Florida.

The Marlins have had the lowest payroll in baseball for the past four years, yet have remained competitive.

Johnson went 15-5 with a 3.23 ERA last year and made the All-Star team. He will be the leader of the staff for years to come.

Marlins re-sign Nolasco

The Florida Marlins have re-signed pitcher Ricky Nolasco to a one-year, $3.8 million contract.

The new deal gives Nolasco a $1.4 million raise over last year. He is 40-30 with a 4.43 ERA over his four years with the club and is considered a key cog in their starting rotation.

He went 13-9 with an ERA just above 5.00 last year, which isn’t exactly something to brag about when you pitch in the pitchers-friendly National League.

Nolasco went 15-8 in 2008, an impressive effort coming off of elbow inflammation that cost him much of the 2007 season. The team is hopeful he can bounce back in 2010.
